Voices Carry is saying the big unveiling of the Vote Yes petition total is scheduled for this afternoon. Any predictions on what the total will be? Will they put Leslee up front or let a less divisive figure take the lead? How many times will they use the phrases "abortion as birth control" and "this is what the voters asked for"? How long will it take after this announcement is made for Missionaries for the Preborn and other fringe groups to load up their trucks and return to South Dakota?
***Edit: Total is 46,000; both in the press coverage and on the Vote Yes website, Allen seems to be taking the lead over Leslee; not much about the message in KELO's coverage, and the wild eyed crazies are loading up their anti-choice caravans as we speak.***

1. 50,000. I think they want more than Healthy Families got in 06.
2. Leslee will be front and center, she can't let go of the spotlight.
3. one zillion times. They may just repeat those phrases over and over again.
4. One-tenth of a second.
You know, I wish I had been aware of the fact that the Campaign for Healthy Families was using all these paid out-of-state signature collectors when I was walking all over creation and getting horribly sunburned in Sioux Falls getting signatures.
Looks like the announced number was 46,000! Good guess! We'll have to wait for the media coverage to answer the other questions...
Ditto on the supposed legions of out of state petition gatherers. I was petition captain for Vermillion and most of our gatherers were local senior citizens. Where were my out-of-state professionals??
If there's one person weirder than Leslee, it's Allan. I would love it if he was the public, ghostly face of this campaign.
What I heard of the message is that "this is about dead babies." I predict that, if we thought we saw a lot of dead baby shit in 2006, it's going to get even uglier in 2008.
Good thing SDCHF did all that great public ed work in 2007 to help people realize that it's not about dead babies.
Oh wait...oh...they didn't do any of that? Whoops. Oh well. I'm sure talking about how "there aren't REALLY exceptions" will be just as good.
Grrr. All right folks, let's gear up for 6 more months of fighting. Some recommended reading, "This Common Secret: My Journey as an Abortion Doctor" by Susan Wicklund.
I've definitely wanted to get a hold of a copy of that, beer girl. I'm sort of the mind that when it comes to changing hearts and minds, getting people to realize that abortion is a "common secret" (i.e. lots of people they know and care about have had them) would be a big step. We need to start talking about real women's situations, not just exceptions, and personalizing them.
Ugh.
What's the plan for us ex-pats?
