Jeez

Are we really at a point in the Democratic primary where younger feminists are calling older feminists 'hysterical'??

Why, yes. Yes we are.

Hint: Insulting people who hold a different opinion does not help your candidate, no matter who your candidate might be. Dividing feminists into "feminists who get it" and "hysterical, condescending, Archie Bunker in heels, extra-rational, emotional, pseudo-populist demagogues of the right" based upon which candidate one supports in this race is not useful either.

Calm down, Anna! You're getting hysterical! :)

Normally, you're just getting historical. Ha!

Okay, that was pretty funny.

Maybe it's not useful, but damn, that "condescending, Archie Bunker in heels" phrase does describe pretty accurately some of what I've heard lately.

I wonder what will happen to feminism as a result of this. I predict a large shift in Ms. membership toward an older, whiter demographic...

I wonder if you even care who you're alienating with that kind of language.

...because, you know, Clinton supporters are human beings (and many of us are feminists) and I'm not hearing much hope out of the Obama folks these days. I'm hearing a lot of really unwarranted insults though.

Once again, I feel like there are plenty of unwarranted insults being thrown around on both sides. "Condescending, Archie Bunker in heels" is pretty inaccurate and unfair, and I've certainly heard some other pretty ridiculous (and Archie Bunker-esque) things coming from my fellow Obama supporters. On the other hand, you could attribute some of Geraldine Ferrero's comments to David Duke and it would probably look pretty believable.

I think the real take away from this election is that we are a nation of Archie Bunkers. Even among democrats, who I stupidly expect more from, have all kinds of latent sexism and racism bubbling just below the surface.

But on the upside, I think the fact that a lot of this is being unmasked is just a sign of the growing pains we have to go through as a country to be mature enough to elect one of these fine candidates and we'll all be the better for it when the whole thing is over (despite the hit the interpersonal relationships seem to be taking).

I think the whole game of "Geraldine Ferraro said something dumb, dismiss her from political life forever," "Well, Obama's pastor hates America, let's ignore anything good he's ever done and drum him out of our society completely" is kind of pointless. I think Obama and Clinton get that as well, and I think Obama made that pretty clear in his speech.

I think neither of them are perfect people (though I don't know any Clinton supporters who suggest that she is) and I think they both surround themselves with some real ding dongs.

I get frustrated with both candidates pretty frequently. When I talk with Obama supporters (and 95% of the people I'm talking with are here in Crazyland, MT) I don't know why it seems to be beyond all bounds of belief that I might support Clinton because I happen to think she's an extremely intelligent and capable person who would make a really good president. That doesn't make me stupid (I think the p.c. term among affluent white liberals for Clinton supporters is "low-information" - I have actually heard this with my own ears, and have read analysis of election results that use this term), or hysterical, or a racist (nor does supporting Obama make a white person not a racist, fyi), or someone who hates hopefulness and doesn't want to see change, and I don't support Hillary Clinton because she is a woman.

It becomes really frustrating to hear and read this kind of stuff all the time, particularly from people who ought to know better.

Oh, and p.s. - I'm not saying I see it from you. :P

"Low information"??

Who comes up with this garbage? Jeebus.

Well, Anna, first of all, I'm not talking about you, and yes, I do care about alienating you and other Clinton supporters who are not yelling at me for supporting Obama. But I do actually know some Clinton supporters who fit the description you posted. I don't know what to do about that, honestly, and while name-calling doesn't help the situation, it does make me feel a tiny bit better. Which is, you know, not the way to change anything, I realize.

It sounds like you and I are having the same experience, from opposite sides.
