I Guess Elephants *DO* Forget

Remember when the John McCain picked Sarah Palin as his running mate, and Republicans suddenly hated sexism?

If you've seen any of the right-wing's attacks on Pelosi lately, it seems "elephants" forget pretty quickly. Via Feministing:

Obviously, it's one thing to say "I disagree with Pelosi's positions on X, Y, and Z." But the constant botox references? Limbaugh's "let's lower the birth rate by putting pictures of her in cheap hotel rooms"? It's just flat-out sexist.

I totally agree that these comments are not appropriate. I don't like it when Rush does it and I don't like it when Olberman does it. And, going through your blog getting to the convention speech, I don't like all the personally denigrating things said on here.

During Palin's speech at the GOP convention, I was curious what liberal women thought about Palin so I happened to have your running commentary up on my laptop as I watched the speech and I remembered a botox statement.

From your own blog posted by Kelsey: "Poor Cindy McCain. She wants to make expressions, but the botox will not let her!"

My question is making fun of one who has had botox exclusively the right of liberals or women?

Obviously, we on DakotaWomen don't all speak for each other (I assume you and PP would say the same about War College). I personally believe that making fun of one who has had botox is the right of everyone.

Actually, after re-reviewing the outtakes, I only really didn't like the comments from the guy on Hardball. Castellanos was actually pretty funny. Rush's comment about botox withdrawal was funny too since so many make jokes about his oxycotin addiction. Rush's hotel comment was pretty weak.

Satire and making fun can be pulled off in an non-offensive way. Rachel Maddow pulls it off very well (she is my favorite TV/radio liberal). I laughed with you liberals at the Bushisms and I'm looking forward to jokes about Obama's ears.

I guess what I was really reacting to is the hyper-sensitivity that these comments were sexist. What would be sexist is if Pelosi was never the subject of satire or got poked fun at. While I doubt it is because of botox (but could be since I'm not a botox expert), you gotta admit she has a speaking style that is rather stiff.

P.S. Except for making comments about Palin's non-adult kids, I found your running commentary pretty funny.

Know why Obama believes in wind power?

...look at his ears!
