Some sad news...

I'm back in South Dakota and heard that retired physician and former abortion provider Dr. Buck Williams passed away earlier this month in Arizona. He and his wife had been retired for many years, but they provided a wide range of medical services to women in South Dakota for decades. They were courageous individuals, and women in South Dakota owe them a great debt.

Because of the climate of intimidation and harassment against abortion providers in South Dakota, all funeral arrangements and memorial services have been and will be private.

Kool Aid Man to Dakota Woman: They Don't Call Him CASH for Nothin'!

I'm starting a new installment here at Dakota Women. I hear a lot of political gossip, though generally don't take the bait on anything that can't be substantiated. On the other hand, there are often nuggets passed along to one of us Dakota ladies that are just too good to pass up...hence, the Kool Aid Man.

I'm just going to say it: the name "Cash" is ridiculous for a whole host of reasons, let alone the added irony it carries being the given name of an Unruh. Wait a minute! I guess it's not ironic at all, considering that's when something is the opposite of what you'd expect whereas in this case, it's EXACTLY what we'd expect. Either way, it's no surprise what Les' and Al' had on their minds thirty-something years ago. And isn't that right about the time that Leslee was charged with four felony accounts (and several misdemeanors) of baby selling?! I believe it was. Ah, the non-irony!

So, Kool Aid Man purports that Cash, a member of the FUN-employed club (and of course, why wouldn't he be?!), currently spends his time tooling around town (pun very intended) in a flash-tastic Range Rover with the estimated value of 90k. Per his current Facebook photo, it also appears Cash has access to a pretty nice boat.

Hmmm. You know what that reminds me of...

Now, now. I know that everyone has had their parents do and say things that have embarrassed them from time to time. And on a lot of levels, I feel pretty bad for Cash. I mean, we all know you can't pick your family. Nonetheless though, it seems that Cash has little problem basking in the benefits of his parents' tax payer theft...and pretty publicly. Remember: if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem, right?

Edit: Woa! This just in (and thank you Angie for the priceless find!): Per Cash Unruh's personal blog, he gives this description of himself which is almost too perfect for words, given my above post.

The blog description reads:

...This description is about me, myself, and I. I am a man who is seeking to live the ultimate life. I am not interested in making a living but instead to have a lifestyle. There's a difference! Have fun reviewing my lifestye and have a good and Godly day. For what is a good day if it is not Godly...

I guess I didn't know "Godly" meant having a certain kind of lifestyle. Read: money. Pretty disgusting if you ask me. Cash also lists himself as selfishly, I mean, "Self-Employed" in his blogger profile. Well isn't that rich?!

Sotomayor hearings today!

The confirmation hearings for Judge Sotomayor start today in the Senate. I'm sure Thune will continue to lead the Republican campaign to convince everyone that she's not up to the job, but we all know that's basically in vain. She's going to get confirmed, and then we get to go back to talking about health care, the Employee Free Choice Act, Employement Non-Discrimination Act, hate crimes legislation, climate change, and other legislative priorities.

In the meantime, I'll try to post highlights from the hearings as they progress. NARAL Pro-Choice America said earlier on Twitter that Operation Rescue co-founder Randall Terry is on the scene. If that isn't a recipe for crazy, I don't know what is.

Update: Apparently Senator Lindsay Graham (R-SC) agrees with me that this confirmation is basically inevitable. Earlier today, he told Sotomayor that "Unless you have a complete meltdown, you're going to get confirmed."

Unruh Whoredom Abounds, SD MSM's Speed Dial Exposed

Move over Paris Hilton! Move over Octo-mom! You've got yourself some serious SD competition!

Yes, media whoredom is something I have long taken issue with, having written about it here, here, and here. Yet...Unruh Whoredom abounds. And it's becoming pretty clear how much the SD MSM aids and abets it.

Whether it's organic foods, Tea Bagging, Healthcare Rallies, or now, Sarah "Ramble" Palin, the MSM seemingly just can't get enough of these two loony tunes. It's surpassed ridiculous. When did using speed dial to contact the same two people become a means of legitimate reporting? Though we all know that the Unruhs welcome any and all forms of face time, the MSM has got to stop providing them with a venue to present themselves as experts in anything, because -- recall -- they're not. Being a professional zealot does not qualify you as an expert in any of the above.

So, MSM, get off your lazy arses and do some actual reporting for once. There are plenty of people who would present actually legitimate and far more interesting opinions on any current event, be it one tied to politics or not. The Unruhs have been defeated, so for the love of god, let's help them fade away quietly.

Crisis Pregnancy Centers Fake Clinics Exposed

Just saw this great new video from RH Reality Check about fake pregnancy clinics, like our very own Alpha Center.

The experiences of women and girls described in the above video sound like they mirror what happens to people who visit the Alpha Center. I'll be curious to see what happens to the bill in Congress that helps create more "truth in advertising."

Even Without a Ban to Worry About, SD Women Still Need Help

South Dakota has gotten plenty of national attention (and assistance) for the various campaigns to make abortion illegal. And while we've managed to beat those attempts, the average South Dakota woman's ability to access abortion may not be any more guaranteed than it was before.

The South Dakota Women's Health Fund, a fund established to help women with the costs associated with accessing abortion, is pretty much broke after a record several months of requests for help. For many women driving a full day to our state's only clinic or to a clinic in a neighboring state, where they may have to stay over night, pay for childcare, or certainly take a day off work, this fund may be their only hope. For those of you outside of South Dakota, Google Map Sioux Falls and see how far it is from pretty much everywhere else.

What good are multi-million dollar campaigns to protect 'choice' if someone doesn't have the means to exercise it? Without some immediate donations, the South Dakota Women's Health Fund will have to suspend their services. Please dig deep and support SDWHF so they can support South Dakota women.

Indian High Court rejects fundamentalism

India's High Court recently struck down an anti-sodomy law from the colonial era, which was used to punish HIV/AIDS outreach workers. In doing so, they issued a pretty firm smackdown to Indians who use religion (in their case, generally, Hinduism and Islam) as a shield for their bigotry:

"Moral indignation, howsoever strong, is not a valid basis for overriding individuals' fundamental rights of dignity and privacy. In our scheme of things Constitutional morality must outweigh the argument of public morality, even if it be the majoritarian view," the court said in its ruling. Going even further, the court found that Section 377 went against the Indian tradition and guiding political principle of inclusiveness.

The Bob Ellises and Steve DooHickeys of the world should take heed. The rest of us are moving on without you.

BREAKING: PALIN STEPPING DOWN

Sarah Palin just announced that she's stepping down as gov as of July 26, and won't be running for re-election.

MSNBC has the video here:

I'm not completely shocked she's not running for re-election (it's the same move Minnesota gov. Tim Pawlenty made, as he's also looking to run for president in 2012), but resigning??

I think stepping down is just bizarre. Quitting early isn't a factor I think most people look for in a president. I think she's actually *not* looking at the national stage.

Can't wait to watch this develop. Isn't the circus fun?!

Update: The full statement is on the soon-to-be-former governor's website. Enjoy.

Another swing and a miss for the Unruhs...

I balked a bit when I saw this headline yesterday over at the War College: "Over 10,000 people anticipated at today's rally against socialized medicine (which was being orchestrated by DW's BFF, Allen Unruh).

Just for the record, assuming the 2008 Census estimates are correct, that's 6% of the whole population of Sioux Falls proper.

So how many people actually did show up? According to the Argus, 325.

Uh, wow. Allen, where did your 10,000 people go? Where's your groundswell of support against health care reform? Maybe they all had doctor's appointments?
